The Artist as Quiltmaker, the second-longest-running art-quilt exhibition in the world, was founded in 1984 by quilt historian Ricky Clark. Noting the success of Quilt National, the first and longest-running art-quilt exhibition, which takes place at the Dairy Barn Arts Center in Athens, Ohio, Clark wanted to guarantee that an outstanding exhibition of art-quilts takes place in Ohio every year. Each show is biennial; Quilt National shows in odd-numbered years and AQM, held in Oberlinat The Firelands Association for the Visual Arts (FAVA), in even-numbered years.

FAVA deliberately chooses not to define 'quilt,' thereby encouraging both established and emerging artists to submit innovative artwork, pushing boundaries and challenging expectations, whether they use traditional or non-traditional techniques or materials.

The Juror: Tina Cassara is a conceptual fiber artist who has harnessed cutting-edge technology to make her powerful statements about the value of women’s labor in the textile industry. She forms delicate lace patterns from images of hands and the words chanted by English girls making lace in earlier centuries. Cassara has taught in the Department of Fiber & Material Studies at the Cleveland Institute of Art for over 25 years. After earning a BA in urban studies, Cassara studied in Peru with Francisca Mayer from Black Mountain College, and taught eco-dyeing with indigenous plants to local weavers. She received an MFA in fiber from Cranbrook Academy of Art and has exhibited widely.
