What theme should we use for a Regional Trunk Show? Or for a Regional Exhibition? To help start thinking about this, I'm sharing some wonderful ideas which Diane Sheckells sent to me.
"This suggestion is based on having worked in schools. One of the local, traditional guilds made up a trunk with children's books on quilting and made a quilt for each book. The trunk included curriculum materials for activities and was loaned out to classroom teachers.
Art quilts could be used in a similar way...especially if the theme could be tied to curriculum goals.
For example:Women in Science....there is right now a number of good books about woman scientists. Quilts that "illustrate" these books could be created to travel to classrooms. The quilts might be exhibited at the schools during their visit.
Art Quilts: Where Art and Science Meet. Art quilts could explore microscopic worlds and be teamed with real photos from the microscope and suggested classroom activities.
Tessellations....the math that inspires art. Explore the work of Escher.
Actually the possibilities are endless. Exhibitors would need to commit to creating a quilt and the trunk would need to be stocked with picture books and a supply of activity suggestions and materials that could be replenished.
It would probably take 6 months to a year to set a trunk up...if it was going to travel throughout our whole area, it should be small enough to mail and someone would need to be the coordinator of each box but once established, the program could be self sustaining. A press release suggestion with each trunk might lead to other exhibit opportunities in communities where the trunks visit." Diane Sheckells
Great ideas! I love the tie-in with regional schools and STEAM education. I'm not certain if any SAQA region has done an exhibition in conjunction with schools. We could be the first! I hope Diane's ideas will help spur YOUR imagination.
The basic idea of the Regional Trunk Show is that each member contributes one 7 x 10" piece. All of the contributed pieces then travel to various exhibition venues in our region for 2-3 years, and then will be auctioned off at the end of the run. I'm reaching out to the Florida and Atlantic Canada reps for ideas about how to launch this in our region.
Please get in touch with me (use contact form on blog) to send in your theme ideas, or to join the committee for this fun project.
